About Nature Unplugged

THE WHY.

Nature Unplugged is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides education, training and outdoor programming that promotes preventative mental health solutions and inspires wellness in the digital age. Since 2012, our work has focused on addressing the declining mental health of tweens, teens and young adults in a digitally saturated, nature-deficient society.

  • The average American in the US checks their phones 150 times a day and spends 90% of their time indoors

  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year

  • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14

MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS RESPONSE:

A thorough review of the mental health crisis response by organizations in the US illuminates that the majority of resources are spent on crisis intervention. This leaves a significant gap and opportunity to focus more resources on preventative solutions.

PROVIDING UPSTREAM, PREVENTATIVE SOLUTIONS:

Through years of research and experience providing programming and resources to the community, we believe that connecting with nature and building healthy relationships with technology is at the core of the solution.

To more effectively deliver our unique curriculum and resources, ENU has developed an introductory workshop and robust train-the-trainer program for educators and leaders in the community who serve young and emerging adults. Resources include books, workbooks, conversation cards and a variety of other tools that inspire connection with nature, healthy boundaries with technology and engaged living.
